Caption: Kellingly Colliery. Miners in the 1950s carrying mining and safety equipment for working at a coal mine. This is Kellingly Colliery at Beal in North Yorkshire, UK. This mine was established in 1960, with production of coal from 1965. At the time of this photograph, in the 1950s, exploratory boreholes were being sunk that established the amount of coal present. Around 2000 miners were employed in two shafts around 800 metres deep. The mine was operated by UK Coal, with its closure announced for late 2015.
