Caption: King's Cross Fire simulation. One-third scale model fire test being carried out to simulate the King's Cross escalator and ticket hall fire. This fire occurred on 18 November 1987 at King's Cross St. Pancras tube station, killing 31 people and injuring 100 people. The fire started on a wooden escalator, before a phenomenon known as flashover caused flames and smoke to shoot upwards and fill the ticket hall, causing most of the deaths. This scale model simulation, carried out at the Health and Safety Executive's laboratories at Buxton, showed that an additional 'trench effect' funnelled the flames upwards.
