Caption: Underground fire simulation. Test being carried out by the UK's Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL) to simulate an underground fire. Such simulations allow the causes of fires to be determined, and regulations can be proposed to prevent future fires. This photograph is part of a set compiled for the centenary of the HSL, which was founded in 1911 as the Home Office Experimental Station. Fires investigated by the HSL include the King's Cross fire of 1987 (see image C025/0183).
