Caption: Sultan of Baybars' Qur'an, published in Cairo, 1304-06. The Qur'an is the central text of the Islamic faith. This copy is lavishly illustrated and decorated with a 'Mamluk carpet' style geometric design. Complex geometric patterns are used throughout Islamic art, architecture, ceramics and printed matter. Despite their mathematical complexity and precision, the geometric patterns were drawn using only simple tools such as a ruler and a compass.
