This test was carried out by what is now the UK's Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL). Health and safety research in the UK started with investigations in the early 20th century into safety in mines, particularly coal dust explosions. Similar considerations apply to dust in other industrial settings, including factories. Explosions in interconnected vessels have different characteristics to single-chamber explosions. An explosion in one area can propagate into other areas through the connections.
