Caption: Engineering safety laboratory. This is the main engineering laboratory at the Stage I site at Broad Lane, Sheffield, UK, built in 1956 and opened in 1957. This facility was operated by the Safety in Mines Research Establishment (SMRE), one of the forerunners of what is today the UK's Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL). Photographed in the 1950s.
