Caption: Ida's Miter (Mitra idae) in the family Mitridae, Montana de Oro State Park, California. The body of the snail is pure white except for its black eye spots. The shell is a pinkish-tan color, but in life it is covered in a strong black periostracum. The periostracum is a thin organic coating or 'skin' which is the outermost layer of the shell.
