Caption: Male California Tiger Salamander (Amblystoma californiense), near Santa Maria, Santa Barbara County, California. The salamanders live in ground squirrel burrows and only emerge in the winter rains to seek out temporary pools for mating and egg laying. This population is isolated and some consider it a separate species. The population is small and under threat from habitat loss. The salamanders and their habitat are currently protected by law.
