Caption: Galileo thermometer. This is a sealed glass tube filled with water. In the water are glass bulbs, each of slightly different density. As the temperature of the water changes its density changes. At any given temperature, some of the bulbs will float and others will sink, depending on their density relative to that of the water. The temperature is read off the tag on the lowest floating bulb.
