Mars. Historical illustration of Mars by German astronomers in Berlin, 1909, created when Mars passed close-by Earth, at a distance of around 60 million kilometres. The dark triangle at centre is the extended elongated slope known as Syrtis Major, the bright circle at top is the ice cap of the Martian South Pole (South is up when viewed through an astronomical refractor).
