Caption: Microbial microscopy analysis. Scientist working for the UK's Health Protection Agency (HPA), using a microscope to study a microbial culture in a petri dish. Culturing and studying such samples allows bacterial and fungal diseases to be diagnosed and treated. Here, a microscope and ultraviolet (UV) light is being used to examine a petri dish with buffered charcoal yeast extract agar (BCYE, black) that has been used to culture Legionella bacteria. This work is being carried out at the HPA's Centre for Infections.
