View below and above the water showing the roots and foliage of a mangrove (Rhizophora sp.). Mangroves are tropical estuarine plants that stand on long root systems, a substantial part of which rise above the water. The roots above water can take in oxygen from the air. The dense thicket of roots below the water provides a perfect habitat for young fish, protecting them from larger predators until they are mature enough to head into open water. Filmed in Fiji.
