Caption: Coloured atomic force micrograph (AFM) of an aryne molecule. This is the first image ever captured of this short-lived molecule and finally confirms the existence of a molecule that was first suggested in 1902. Arynes are highly reactive due to a non-linear triple bond and only exist as intermediates in reactions for a few milliseconds. The image was obtained by scientists at IBM Research, Zurich, Switzerland, and CiQUS at the University of Santiago de Compostela, Spain, using a carbon monoxide AFM tip.
