H3N2 is a subtype of the influenza A virus. Influenza A can infect multiple species and is the most virulent human pathogen of the three influenza types (A, B and C), meaning that it has the potential to cause a pandemic. N3N2 was responsible for the flu pandemic of 1968-1969, which infected an estimated 50,000,000 people in the United States, killing 33,000.
