Caption: Louvre pyramids and buildings, Paris, France. This structure of glass and steel is the entrance to the Louvre art museum in the Court of Napoleon. The Louvre is a former palace that housed the French Royal family in the 18th century. It is now an art museum and gallery, and is the largest museum in the world. The pyramids were designed by the American architect I. M. Pei, and built between 1985 and 1989. The main pyramid (left) rises 21 metres above the ground, and provides access to underground galleries. The smaller pyramids (lower right) act as skylights, allowing the underground galleries to be lit by daylight. Photographed in 2013.
