Caption: Central-pivot irrigation, Saudi Arabia. Infrared satellite image of agricultural plots that are irrigated by central-pivot irrigation systems, giving them a circular shape. A long water pipe rotates around a well at the centre of each plot. The water is pumped from deep underground as the area receives virtually no rainfall. These agricultural plots are near Tubarjal, Saudi Arabia. Image obtained by the Sentinel-2A satellite in 2015. Sentinal-2A (launched 23 June 2015) is part of the European Space Agency's Copernicus programme. This ESA programme is aimed at achieving an autonomous, multi-level operational Earth observation capacity.
