Caption: Uranium mill clean up project. View over the site of the now disused Atlas uranium mill, Moab, Utah, USA. This area is now the site of the US Department of Energy's Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action (UMTRA) project, which is removing 16 million tons of radioactive uranium tailings from the old Atlas mill site. The mill processed uranium for nuclear weapons and nuclear power plants from 1956-1984. Scientists fear that long-term exposure could harm human health, and that a flood could contaminate the adjacent Colorado River. The tailings are being removed to a safer disposal site 30 miles away.
