Caption: Intestinal hamartoma. Light micrograph of a section through a polypoid hamartoma from the colon (large intestine) of a patient with Cowden syndrome. A hamartoma is a benign (non-cancerous) malformation that resembles a tumour but is made up of tissue components normally found at that site but growing in a disorganised mass. They often present no symptoms and are not detected unless seen on an image taken for some other reason. Cowden syndrome is a rare genetic disorder characterised by multiple hamartomas and an increased risk of certain forms of cancer. Magnification: x280, when printed 10 centimetres wide.
