Caption: Orchid bee. Macrophotograph of an orchid bee (Eufriesea pulchra) from the Guyanan rainforest. Orchid bees are brightly coloured tropical bees with long tongues, allowing them to reach nectar in deep-throated tropical plants. The males are especially important in the pollination of some orchids, from which they collect aromatic fragrances thought to play a role in territorial display and courtship. Orchid bees are only found in Central and South America. Photographed by the USGS Bee Inventory and Monitoring Lab: an organisation dedicated to identifying, cataloguing and monitoring bees and other insect species.
