Caption: Scoliid wasp. Macrophotograph of the head of a double-banded scoliid wasp (Scolia bicincta). Scoliids are solitary wasps, and predators of scarab beetle larvae. Females burrow into the ground in search of these larvae and paralyze them with their sting, to use as a food source for their own offspring. Photographed by the USGS Bee Inventory and Monitoring Lab: an organisation dedicated to identifying, cataloguing and monitoring bees and other species.
