Caption: View of the MPS (Multi-Particle Spectrometer) particle detector at the Brookhaven National Laboratory, Long Island, New York, in 1976. The detector records the interactions of particles produced at the AGS (Alternating Gradient Synchro- tron) accelerator. The particle beam from the AGS travels through the beam pipe at the bottom of the picture, through the yellow focusing magnets, to impact the target below the black cube.
