Caption: Gene transcription and translation, from DNA to RNA and the resulting protein. Gene expression occurs in two major stages. The first of these, known as transcription, takes place in the cell nucleus and is the process during which genetic information from DNA or deoxyribonucleic acid is transferred to a particular type of RNA or ribonucleic acid known as messenger RNA or mRNA. When the transcription phase is complete, the portion of the DNA coded for a protein is represented by a messenger RNA molecule that can be used as a template for translation, the second stage of gene expression, which takes place in the cytoplasm of the cell. During translation, RNA directs the assembly of proteins by linking amino acids on the cell's ribosomes. The coding sequence of the mRNA determines the amino acid sequence in the protein that's produced.
