Caption: Pan along cut-away of epithelial tissue showing layers, cell sheets, nerves, hair follicles and capillaries. Of the four tissue groups, epithelial tissues are found virtually everywhere in the human body. Because epithelial cells cover all external and internal surfaces of the body, everything that enters or leaves the body must cross an epithelial sheet. Major functions of lining epithelia include protection, absorption and secretion. Epithelia cells that form glands are specialized for secretion. These continuous sheets of densely packed cells are linked together by cell junctions that form a protective barrier but also allow communication between cells. Epithelial tissues are avascular, depending upon underlying tissues for nutrients and oxygen.
