Caption: An action potential travels down the axon of a neuron, triggering the release of neurotransmitters from the dendrite's terminals. An action potential propagates as a wave along the axon of a neuron. The current flowing inward at one point of the axon during an action potential triggers depolarisations on adjacent areas of the axon, provoking identical action potentials at neighbouring axon patches. Due to refractory periods, the action potentials spread like falling dominoes in one direction toward the axon terminals. Once at the terminals, the action potential triggers the release of neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft.
