Caption: Nerve cell membrane; positive ions are in the extracellular fluid, negative ions are in the intracellular fluid. At rest, neuron cell membranes exhibit a resting membrane potential. That is, the inside or intracellular surface of the membrane is negative with respect to the outside or extracellular surface. This resting membrane potential is generated by an unequal distribution of ions between the extracellular fluid and the intracellular fluid. In general, the extracellular fluid has a greater concentration of sodium, calcium, and chloride ions, while the intracellular fluid is rich in potassium ions and large, negatively-charged organic acids.
