Caption: Calcium binds to troponin leading to a crossbridge, power stroke cycle in the muscle's myofibril and then, to muscle contraction. Calcium diffuses from the sarcoplasmic reticulum into the cytoplasm and begins to bind to the troponin regulatory protein. This binding triggers a conformational change in the structure of troponin. Since troponin is attached to tropomyosin, this causes tropomyosin to be displaced, thus exposing the myosin binding sites on actin. When myosin binding sites on actin are exposed, myosin binds tightly to actin, forming a crossbridge and initiating the power stroke cycle and muscle contraction.
