Caption: The anaerobic system is demonstrated in a graphic animation. The anaerobic metabolic system, so-named because it can generate energy in the absence of oxygen, is also a rapid producer of energy. It uses glycolysis, a metabolic pathway that coverts glucose into pyruvate, and leads to the formation of ATP. This system is limited by the ability of the cell to tolerate the lactic acid that accumulates as a by-product of these reactions. Typically, anaerobic metabolism can supply about thirty to forty seconds of maximal muscle activity prior to the critical accumulation of acidity.
