Caption: The thyroid rotates revealing the 4 parathyroid glands on the back. The four parathyroid glands, each about the size of a grain of rice, and located on the back of the thyroid gland, secrete parathyroid hormone, or pth. Pth stimulates osteoclasts to break down bone. This bone resorption releases calcium which is absorbed into the blood supply, thus increasing the blood calcium levels back to within normal range. Pth also stimulates calcium absorption in the kidneys and intestines.
