Caption: The aerobic system is demonstrated in a graphic animation. Finally, there is the aerobic metabolic system, in which the cell's mitochondria utilize oxygen to meet energy demands. In a resting skeletal muscle, the mitochondria produce a surplus of ATP which is used to build up reserves of creatine phosphate, available to the body when the need arises. The advantage of the aerobic metabolic system is that it can theoretically provide unlimited energy, so long as there is sufficient oxygen present. This metabolic pathway results in the production of pyruvic acid without the lactic acid associated with the anaerobic system.
