Caption: A seesaw graphic demonstrates the blood and bone calcium balance. While the skeletal system is the primary storehouse for calcium, this critically important mineral must also be present in sufficient quantities in the blood in order to carry out its various functions throughout the body. One reason bone health can be difficult to maintain is that the skeleton is simultaneously serving two different functions that are in competition with each other. First strong bones are needed to provide support for the body, and calcium is needed to help make the bones strong. But when calcium is in short supply elsewhere in the body, regulatory hormones remove calcium stored in the bones and take it to the needed areas.
