Caption: Track down the length of the spinal cord as vertebrae dissolve on and off, revealing the nervous system beneath. The spinal cord consisting of millions of nerve fibers is responsible for transmitting electrical information between the brain and the rest of the body. Together, the brain and the spinal cord comprise the central nervous system, or CNS, which connects to the peripheral nervous system, or PNS the spinal cord is anywhere from a quarter to a half-inch thick about the diameter of a human finger extending approximately eighteen inches from the base of the skull to the upper lumbar region of the spinal column. The spinal cord itself is soft and rope-like. It is much simpler and more uniform than its central nervous system neighbour, the brain.
