Caption: DNA fingerprinting sequence. Animation showing the stages in linking a suspect to a crime by analysis of samples of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), a process called DNA fingerprinting or DNA profiling. The animation starts with a crime scene, and then shows a sample of cells (containing DNA) being taken from a suspect's mouth. The sample is placed in a solvent and spun in a centrifuge for 15 minutes to extract the DNA. The next stage of the animation shows the DNA being broken up by an enzyme into segments. The sample is then added by pipette to an electrophoresis gel. This contains a sample from the crime scene (left) and five reference samples from suspects. Samples 3 and 5 match the crime scene. Further analysis is then carried out on short repeating sequences of the DNA. This is shown at a molecular level (the DNA nucleotide sequences repeat blue-blue, green-green), and then the electrophoresis gel output is shown again, This time, sample 3 is eliminated and reference sample 5 is matched with the crime scene.
