Caption: Fossil fuel CO2 release. Global dataset animation showing how atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration changes over a two-year time period (2011-2012) due to daily emissions of CO2 from the burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas. CO2 is a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming. Emissions data comes from the ODIAC (Open-source Data Inventory for Anthropogenic CO2) and are based on economic data. The animation begins with a map of the world with no fossil fuel CO2. As time progresses, CO2 emissions accumulate over a two-year period. The colour-coded key shows CO2 emission in parts per million (ppm) from blue (low) through green, yellow and orange to red (high). Large emitters are Eastern Asia, Western Europe, and North-East North America. By the end of 2012, the entire Northern Hemisphere is red, illustrating a total accumulation of over 10 ppm of CO2.
