William Markowitz (1907-1998), US astronomer. Markowitz is best known for his work on the standardisation of time. He developed the ephemeris time scale as an international time standard and worked with British physicist Louis Essen to calibrate atomic clocks in terms of the ephemeris second. International Astronomical Union (IAU) commission on time from 1955 to 1961. Photographed at an IAU meeting in Grenoble, France, on 28th August 1976.
