ISS plant growth system. Mature plants ready for harvesting inside the Veg-01 ('Veggie') plant growth system on the International Space Station (ISS). NASA's Veg-01 experiment is being used to study the in-orbit function and performance of the plant growth facility and its rooting 'pillows' that contain the seeds. Such research and technology will be used to develop methods for growing fresh vegetables in space, to add more variety and nutrition to the heavily processed thermostabilised diets astronauts receive during space missions. Such technology would be especially important for the multi-year journeys necessary to undertake deep-space missions such as taking people to Mars.
