The atmospheric distribution of caesium-137 and iodine-131 is colour-coded from white (0 kilobecquerels per metre squared), through yellow (0.01 kBq/m2) and red (10kBq/m2) to burgundy (40kBq/m2). The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant was damaged during the earthquake and tsunami of March 2011. It led to the meltdown of three of the nuclear reactors and leak of radioactive material. The data for this image was obtained 'Atmospheric dispersion and ground deposition induced by the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant accident: A local-scale simulation and sensitivity study' Korsakissok et al, Atmospheric Environment (2013).
