Caption: Francois de Chateaubriand (1768-1848). 1820 illustration of the French vicomte (viscount) and writer Francois-Rene de Chateaubriand. Chateaubriand is considered the founder of Romanticism in French literature. Several of his works were inspired by his travels in Europe, the Middle East, and North America. He also fought as a royalist and wrote political tracts during and after the French Revolution. Other works include 'Atala' (1801), 'Genie du christianisme' (1802), and 'Les Martyrs' (1809).
