Caption: Judith beheading Holofernes. 1864 illustration depicting the biblical account of the beheading of Holofernes by Judith from the deuterocanonical Book of Judith. In the story, Holofernes was an Assyrian general who was about to destroy Judith's home, the city of Bethulia. Judith is able to enter the tent of Holofernes because of his desire for her and , when Holofernes passes out due to drink, he is decapitated by Judith.
