Caption: Richard Sheridan (1751-1816). 1860 illustration of the Irish playwright, poet and politician Richard Brinsley Butler Sheridan. Sheridan was the long-term owner (1776-1809) of the Theatre Royal in London's West End. He was also a Whig Member of Parliament for 32 years, from 1780-1812. His most famous play 'The School for Scandal' (1777) is considered one of the greatest comedies of manners in the English language. Sheridan was buried at Poets' Corner in Westminster Abbey, London.
