Caption: Maximilien Robespierre (1758-1794). 1857 illustration of the French lawyer and Revolutionary politician Maximilien Marie Isidore de Robespierre. Robespierre was one of the best-known and influential figures of the French Revolution (1789-1799), particularly the Reign of Terror (1792-1794). He was executed in 1794 after being accused of being the 'soul' of the Terror, but his role in the brutal excesses of the Terror has not been proven.
