Caption: Charles Napier (1598-1657). 1864 illustration of the British naval officer and politician Charles Napier. During his sixty years in the Royal Navy, Napier served in the War of 1812, the Napoleonic Wars, Syrian War and the Crimean War. He also spent a period commanding the Portuguese navy in the Liberal Wars. Napier was an active Liberal Member of Parliament and an advocate of humane reform in the Navy and the development of iron ships.
