Caption: George Nares (1831-1915). 1868 illustration of the British naval officer and Arctic explorer Captain George Strong Nares. Nares commanded the first ship to pass through the Suez Canal, the Challenger Expedition (1872-1876), which lay the foundation for modern oceanography, and the British Arctic Expedition (1875-1876). The men of the British Arctic Expedition were the first Europeans to see the Northern coast of Ellesmere Island, Canada.
