Caption: Barghash bin Said (1837-1888). 1882 illustration of the second Sultan of Zanzibar Barghash bin Said Al-Busaid (Sayyid Barghash bin Said). Bargash ruled Zanzibar from 7th October 1870 to 26th march 1888. He is credited with building much of the infrastructure of Stone Town, now the old town of Zanzibar City. He was the last Sultan of Zanzibar to maintain a measure of independence against European control and helped abolish the slave trade in Zanzibar, signing an agreement with Britain prohibiting it in 1870.
