Caption: Murder of Thomas Becket. 1864 illustration depicting the murder of Thomas Becket (1118-1170) by four knights inside Canterbury Cathedral, England. Becket was Archbishop of Canterbury from 1162 until his murder in 1170. He is recognised as a saint and martyr by both the Catholic and Anglican churches. He conflicted with Henry II of England over the rights and privileges of the Church and was murdered by followers of the King in Canterbury Cathedral on 29th December 1170.
