Caption: Evangelista Torricelli (1608-1647). 1856 illustration of the Italian physicist and mathematician Evangelista Torricelli. Torricelli is best known as the inventor of the barometer in 1643 as well as his work on optics and the method of indivisibles. He spent three months with Galileo, before Galileo's death in 1642, and then succeeded him as mathematician to the court of Tuscany. The torr, a unit of pressure, was named in his honour.
