Caption: Herman Haupt (1817-1905), US general and engineer. Haupt is rowing a boat made of a pair of small pontoons. This was a design used by the Union Army during the US Civil War for scouts crossing streams or travelling across lakes. The pontoons were designed to be portable, with loops for poles and struts and a seating platform to be added. Haupt was a civil engineer, who helped revolutionise US military and civil transportation before, during and after the US Civil War. Photographed during the war, circa 1862 or 1863, by US photographer Andrew J. Russell (1829-1902).
