Caption: The crater of Erta Ale volcano in northern Ethiopia contains a boiling lava lake for around 100 years. The temperature of the glowing lava is around 1100 degrees centigrade. Its cooling surface is dark and only around 400 degrees centigrade. When the skin tears open, molten matter gushes to the height of 20 metres for several minutes.
