Caption: Prehistoric marine arthropod. Computer illustration of a Pterygotus sp. marine arthropod. This large predatory prehistoric sea scorpion (order Eurypterida) lived from the early Silurian (around 443 million years ago) to the early Devonian period (around 419 million years ago). Pterygotus grew to around 1.6 metres long and used its large chelae (pincers, top) to grasp its prey.
