Caption: Albert Markham (1841-1918). 1874 illustration of the British Arctic explorer, naval officer and author Albert Hastings Markham. Markham was second-in-command of HMS Alert, under Captain Nares, during the British Arctic Expedition of 1875-1876. He spent much time working on whaling ships, during which he kept detailed notes on the ice conditions. He also designed the flag of New Zealand.
