Caption: Gustave Eiffel (1832-1923). 1889 illustration of the French engineer and architect Alexandre Gustave Eiffel. Eiffel is best known for designing the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France, for the 1889 Universal Exposition. He designed several other landmarks, including the Porto viaduct in Portugal, Pest railway station in Hungary and the internal structure of the Statue of Liberty. His involvement with building a Panama canal was a failure leading to his withdrawal from business.
